Getting your business noticed on social media can be difficult and often it feels like you’re a small fish in a big pond, especially as a local business. Over the past few years, the algorithm has impacted businesses and their exposure in a big way as organic reach of content continues to decline.
While a paid social media strategy will help get your business seen more on social media, there are some things you can do to gain more traffic and followers organically! These tips are not a way to cheat the system, they’re just small tweaks and ideas to increase visibility. So, do I have your attention? Great! Here are three ways to get seen organically on social media.
Biz besties are the best! Partner with other local businesses and you can use each other’s audiences to reach more people with your posts. Host a joint event or support a local charity together. Tag each other in your content and enjoy the added benefit of expanding your audience.
Be Search Friendly
Use your location on your posts whether it’s the city or the physical location of your business (I prefer your business location). On platforms like Instagram, you search phrases like “restaurants in Charlottesville,” and you want to make sure you show up!
You can also leverage hashtags in your content to become more search friendly and reach new people. I recommend using hashtags for your local area and hashtags that your target customers may follow. As a typical rule for each platform, here are the number of hashtags I would aim for – Facebook (1-2 hashtags), Instagram (10-15 hashtags), Twitter (1-2 hashtags), and LinkedIn (3-4 hashtags).
Leverage Your Employees
Encourage your employees to share your business’ social media posts with their networks! Their networks are way more likely to trust your brand because the recommendation is coming from someone they know!
Integrating these 3 simple actions into your social media strategy will go a long way. Now that you’re feeling pretty amazing and ready to tackle the world of social media, I challenge you to implement at least one of these tips this week!

Hi friends! My name is Sydney, founder of Marathon Marketing & Branding, and I’m so happy you’re here! As you might have guessed, I am an avid runner, which allows me to have more of that pinot and pasta in life. Running long-distance is all about training, endurance, and consistency. I realized that these same traits are directly applicable to social media marketing as well.
